(Based On and Taken From John 4: 4-26)

(Jesus is sitting beside a well. Well can be implied, and does not need to be a prop or on the set. Samaritan woman enters carrying a water jar on her shoulder. Water jar should be sufficiently large and of brown clay, not ornate. She is startled to see Jesus.)

WOMAN: What are you doing here? (She lowers her jar into the well)

JESUS: I was tired. I decided to rest here, by the well of Jacob. My friends have gone into Sychar to buy some food. We’re on our way to Galilee.

WOMAN: And you came this way? Most Jews avoid walking through Samaria, even if the way is quicker. (Pulls up the jar and starts to walk away)

JESUS: Will you give me a drink?

WOMAN: (Putting down the jar in surprise) You’re a Jew! You wouldn’t touch this jar if I gave it to you, why do you ask me for a drink? You can see I’m Samaritan!

JESUS: I know who you are. But if you knew how to recognize a gift from God, or even if you recognized who it is who says to you, "Give me a drink," you would be asking me to give you living water.

WOMAN: Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and this well is deep. Where are you going to get living water? Our father, Jacob, gave us this well. He drank of it himself, and his sons, and all his cattle. You’re not greater than Jacob, are you? Are you just going to pull water out of thin air?

JESUS: (Jesus takes the jar and drinks from it) Jacob’s water is good, and comes from a pure spring. It quenches the thirst of your body. But everyone who drinks of this water (holding up the jar) is going to be thirsty again soon. Whoever drinks the water I give him will never be thirsty again. The water I give out will become a fountain inside of him that springs up into everlasting life.

WOMAN: Water that gives a person everlasting life? That’s one I never heard before. I’m tired of being thirsty and lugging this jar here every day. Give me this water.

JESUS: Fine. Just go get your husband and bring him here with you.

WOMAN: (Turning away her face, then slowly turning back) I don’t have a husband.

JESUS: Good answer. You have had five husbands, and the one you’re living with now is not your husband at all: you have told me the truth.

WOMAN: (Kneels before him) I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been disrespectful. I see now, you are a prophet. (Rises up again, quickly). You know there has always been hatred between our peoples, because of where we worship. Our ancestors bowed down to God in this mountain, in our own temple, and that is what I’ve always been taught to do. (Pointing) But you people say, "Oh, no, Jerusalem is the only legitimate place for men to worship."

JESUS: Woman, you must believe Me. Very soon a time is coming when God the Father will not be bowed down to and worshiped in this mountain temple or in the Jerusalem temple.

WOMAN: (Shocked) Neither one?

JESUS: You Samaritans bow down to something that you do not even know. You have thrown away all the prophets except Moses, so how can you claim to know God when you have rejected what He has told you about Himself? We Jews worship what we do know, because the prophets tell us about who God is. Salvation really is from the Jews.

WOMAN: I thought you’d say that.

JESUS: But a time is coming, in fact, it’s already here, when the Father will seek worshipers who will worship the Father in spirit and truth. God is spirit. He is not bound by city walls or veils in a temple or a mountain or any location. He chose for the Jews to worship Him in the temple, but soon the Father will call out those from every nation who will worship in the truth of His Word, and He will give them a spirit reborn into righteousness.

WOMAN: Well, you seem to know about my life. You know my spirit is not right, and I don’t live in truth. What does this have to do with me? I am lost from all hope and joy. Why would He want someone like me?

JESUS: You have no joy because you are still in your sins. Those whom the Father calls to repentance will not be lost. They will confess their sins to God and He will forgive them. If you repent and turn from your wicked ways, and believe in Him, God will give you a new spirit, a clean spirit. And His Holy Spirit will begin to commune with yours without the need of a temple. Then you will walk in faith, you will have hope, and the joy that only results from repentance to Him and obedience to His ways.

WOMAN: I know that the Messiah is coming, the one they call Christ. He is the One who will tell us the whole truth—about God, and worship, and salvation. I would listen to such a One if He would even choose to speak to me. (She snatches the jar and begins to leave)

JESUS: I AM the one speaking to you.

(She turns quickly, then sinks to the steps. Begin voiceover)

VOICE: The LORD your God is a jealous God…showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. (Deuteronomy 5:9)

…There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. (Luke 15:7)

There is a time coming, and now is, when the Father will call together those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. (John 4:23)
